  • How do I get to Scattery Island?

    All tours depart from Kilrush Marina in Co. Clare. The ferry journey takes approximately 20 minutes, including passage through the marina’s lock gates. Please arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled departure.​

  • Do I need to book in advance?

    Not at all, you can certainly wait to book on the day. But we recommend advance booking to ensure your seat, especially during peak season and to avail of our early bird booking discount! Sailing times vary daily due to tidal conditions, so securing your spot ahead of time ensures a smooth experience.​

  • What does the tour include?

    Your ticket covers a return ferry trip, a guided walking tour of the monastic sites, and a complimentary walking map. You’ll have between 2 to 2.5 hours to explore the island.​

  • Are there different tour options?

    Yes, we offer the standard Scattery Island Visit and the Great Island Experience, which provides additional time and an audio tour of the lighthouse and battery areas.​

  • Is the island suitable for children?

    Absolutely! Children receive a special walking map with a coloring page to engage them in the island’s flora, fauna, and birdlife. Once on the island, they can also enjoy rock painting or dress up as a viking and conquer the island!

  • What to Bring

    Comfortable walking shoes, a waterproof jacket, water, snacks, and sunscreen are advisable. If you’ve booked an international language audio tour, don’t forget your earphones.​

  • Are there facilities on the island?

    Yes, there are toilet facilities both at Kilrush Marina and on the island. Please note that there are no shops or cafes on the island, so plan accordingly.​

  • Can I bring a picnic?

    Certainly! Many visitors enjoy bringing a picnic to savor amidst the island’s serene landscapes. Please remember to take all rubbish with you to help preserve the island’s natural beauty.​

  • Is swimming allowed?

    While some visitors choose to swim, please be aware that there are no lifeguards on duty, and swimming is at your own risk.​

  • Is the island accessible for those with mobility issues?

    Parts of the island has uneven terrain with a mix of gravel and grass paths, which may be challenging for some visitors. We recommend contacting us in advance to discuss any specific accessibility needs.​

  • Are pets allowed?

    Due to the island’s protected wildlife and habitats, the only dogs allowed on Scattery island are guide dogs and support dogs.​

  • What happens in case of bad weather?

    Sailings are weather-dependent. In the event of cancellations due to adverse conditions, we will notify you as soon as possible and offer to reschedule or provide a refund.​

  • What languages are the tours available in?

    Guided tours are conducted in English. However, audio tours are available in French, German, Italian, and Spanish for a small additional fee.​

  • Is there parking at Kilrush Marina?

    Yes, free parking is available at Kilrush Marina for visitors joining the tour. There is also street parking in the street adjacent to the Marina.

  • Can I purchase gift vouchers?

    Yes, gift vouchers are available and make for a thoughtful present. They can be purchased directly through our website

  • What a fantastic trip to Scattery Island located on the mouth of the Shannon Estuary today. The island is uninhabited since 1978. For anyone looking for a day trip that the whole family will enjoy this is definitely worth booking. From the staff at the Marina, the skipper the OPW tour guide it’s an absolute fantastic trip.  On our return trip the skipper stopped so we could take pictures of the dolphins who were swimming all around the boat. Thanks to Scattery Island Tours for a fantastic day.

  • We took the Scattery Island Tour boat, very fast and pleasant trip over. We were met by a very informative tour guide who brought us to the key monastic sites. We then took the 15 minute walk to the lighthouse and artillery battery. We then had a picnic and the children were then invited to paint some sea stones which they enjoyed. It is a beautiful, scenic, unspoilt island. A little gem.
